Los operadores de sala de control son controladores de procesos productivos, que no interactúan directa o físicamente ni con los procesos, insumos, ni maquinarias, sino que lo hacen a través de comandos y pantallas que gobiernan lógicas de control conjuntas o unitarias. Deben tener un amplio conocimiento de los procesos, los parámetros operativos, y los aspectos específicos de ingeniería que aplican a la producción correspondiente (gases, fluídos, inercia, etc., o lo que se requiere de acuerdo con el proceso en cuestión). Están localizados fuera de la infraestructura productiva, a veces, completamente alejados. Se apoyan en sistemas de vigilancia remota, complementados por la información que le entregan los operadores de terreno. Normalmente, se asocian a procesos de flujo continuo o masivo. Deben manejar grandes cantidades de información sintetizada o en detalle.
